Rangers v Celtic: Philippe Clement rushes to Cyriel Dessers defence

Philippe Clement has jumped to the defence of Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers ahead of the Celtic SPFL clash on Sunday, 7 April.

The Belgian admits that the life of a striker is such that if you score then you are lauded and if you miss chances you’re labelled a bad player.

Dessers has been the first-choice forward option post Danilo’s injury with Fabio Silva operating out wide.

Clement said, via the club’s official Twitter handle: “The life of a striker is you score chances and are the guy, you miss chances and you get told you are a bad player.

“It doesn’t work that way.

“It’s not just scoring, it’s all the work for the team from the forward players. Cyriel (Dessers) also puts a lot of effort into our defensive setup, he is in a good way and everyone sees a better player than five months ago.”

Dessers backed to start for Rangers v Celtic

Clement’s defence of Dessers accurately captures the nuanced nature of a striker’s role in football.

Dessers’ journey this season exemplifies this as with 13 goals and two assists in 20 league starts, the 29-year-old has shown his ability to find the back of the net.

However, what sets him apart is his commitment to the team beyond scoring goals.

Clement rightly highlights Dessers’ defensive efforts and overall improvement throughout the season.

This holistic approach to assessing a striker’s performance is crucial.

It acknowledges that success in football is not solely measured by goals but also by the player’s contributions to the team’s overall gameplay.

Rangers fans, understanding Dessers’ growth and dedication, will undoubtedly support him in the upcoming Celtic clash, recognising his value beyond just his scoring record.
