Chris Sutton shares James Tavernier admission ahead of Rangers v Celtic Old Firm clash

Chris Sutton has been blown away by the “terrific” season that James Tavernier is experiencing for Rangers ahead of the Old Firm derby clash with Celtic on Sunday (7 April).

The full-back has netted 22 times in all competitions for the Gers, as well as registered 10 assists, making him the most dangerous attacking outlet in Philippe Clement’s side.

Rangers fans will be hoping that Tavernier can have an important say in the Old Firm clash as they continue to push for the club’s second Scottish Premiership title in the last decade.

Writing for the Daily Record on Friday (5 April), Sutton said: “The Rangers captain is having another terrific season and his numbers in terms of goals are outstanding.

“It’s not just him scoring, he creates so much with his terrific ability to produce quality balls from the flanks and support the attack, as he did last weekend with his brilliant volley to open the scoring against Hibs.”

How important will James Tavenier be in Rangers v Celtic?

The 32-year-old defender was the only Rangers player on the scoresheet when the Old Firm rivals met at Celtic Park in December’s 2-1 defeat, firing home a late free-kick past Joe Hart.

The Ibrox faithful will be hoping their skipper can recreate that same shooting form against their rivals, coming into the match off the back of a brilliant volley against Hibernian on Saturday 30 March.

A victory would be vital for Clement’s team, with just one point separating them from the Hoops, who currently occupy the top spot in the Scottish Premiership.

Rangers do have a game in hand, which could prove very important in the end-of-season run-in, with a clash with Dundee FC to come after the Celtic clash.

The Blues have lost just one league match since the defeat at Celtic Park in December, helping close the gap on Brendan Rodgers’ side, and even take the top spot at one point.
