Rangers: Philippe Clement bias mooted by Chris Sutton after what Brendan Rodgers did

Chris Sutton has hinted at the SPFL treating Rangers boss Philippe Clement differently from Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers.

Rodgers got a one-match ban for his comments about a referee but Sutton’s assertion is that the Belgian gets away scot-free after what he says.

There has been a growing distrust in officials given their glaring errors this season.

Sutton wrote in the Daily Record on 30 March: “Pretty much all of them have been critical of VAR or referees. I’ve seen strong stuff from Derek McInnes, Steven Naismith, Stuart Kettlewell has recently gone to town and Philippe Clement has taken the odd pop. Neil Warnock was only here a few weeks and moaned about it after most games. None of those guys ended up in the dock. It seems it’s okay to infer officials are incompetent – but you can’t actually say it.

“Rodgers just said what they are all thinking – what most of us are thinking. In courts you can’t get done for defamation if what you say is true. But it doesn’t seem to work that way in the SFA legal system. Even if the officials were incompetent you’re not allowed to say it. Rodgers will take his slap on the wrists but for everyone’s sake I hope the people in charge take note and raise their game.”

Rangers fans might agree with Chris Sutton here

Gers fans often perceive Sutton’s remarks as biased against their club as his tendency to scrutinise decisions and actions, while perhaps overlooking similar situations involving other clubs, reinforces the perception of favouritism toward Celtic.

For the Ibrox faithful, the ex Hoops striker’s comments contribute to a broader narrative of perceived injustices or biases within footballing institutions and media.

The officiating has been awful this season in the SPFL and fans of most if not all clubs will agree to that assertion.

Things need to change and if people within the game cannot criticise officials then perhaps nobody can and that’s not how it should be.

If managers and players are held to account for their actions, the same thing should happen for officials as well.
