Rangers: Borna Barisic ‘concern’ raised as possible Ibrox exit may already be lined up
Kenny Miller says his only “concern” over Borna Barisic is if the defender is fully committed to Rangers before the summer transfer window.
Barisic may have a vital part to play in the final stretch of the Gers’ campaign due to an injury sustained by Ridvan Yilmaz on international duty.
Croatian media outlet Germanijak reported last week that the left-back may already have agreed to join Turkish side Trabzonspor.
That report has since been rebuffed by Football Scotland, but Barisic’s future does appear to lie away from Ibrox.
Speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard [25 March], Sky Sports pundit Miller said: “If this had been a month ago, I’d have said it probably wouldn’t have made too much of a difference.
“Yilmaz has come in and has been outstanding. He’s scoring goals now and, while not the same outlet as [James] Tavernier on the other side, he’s doing his job really well.
“The only concern I’d have for Borna Barisic is where his head’s at because of his contract running down, two months left. Has he agreed to go somewhere else? Could he be protecting himself?
“If Yilmaz is injured, he’ll have a massive role to play between now and the end of the season in terms of trying to win leagues and cups.”
Rangers fans awaiting Ridvan Yilmaz injury update
Ridvan limping off for Turkey last week, and subsequently returning to Glasgow for a scan, is not great news for Philippe Clement.
The defender has been in very good form for the Gers this year, pretty much coinciding with the talk surrounding his own future in January.
We await to see just how long Ridvan will miss, but you have to assume he will not be risked in every game by Clement.
Barisic will therefore be needed, and he has been a consistent enough presence for the Gers when called upon.
Even if he has agreed a move elsewhere, Barisic will see this as a chance to make some history by playing his part in a domestic treble.
If Rangers had nothing to play for, it would be a different matter. Instead, whoever is called upon will undoubtedly do their all for the team.
