Rangers v Celtic: Barry Ferguson issues controversy admission

Barry Ferguson believes a bizarre VAR decision could swing the title in favour of Rangers or Celtic this season.

Currently, the Hoops sit on top of the league, but the ball is in Gers’ court as they’re only a point behind and have a game in hand as their weekend fixture got postponed.

Philippe Clement has remarkably turned the fortunes around for his side and has made them favourites for the title.

Ferguson wrote in the Daily Record: “No excuses. We’re heading into the business end of the fiercest title battle we’ve seen in years and both Rangers and Celtic look set to do so with some big guns back from injury.

“No disadvantages either. Sunday’s call-off at Dens Park would have been really disappointing for my old team and was a bad look on our game but don’t tell me it damages Rangers’ hopes of becoming champions. This is the way it should be – two strong teams going at it hammer and tongs to decide who is ultimately the best.

“My only fear? I’ve got to be honest. It’s VAR. Am I concerned a needless decision from the video assistants could have an impact on the title? 100 per cent. I’m worried some crazy decision could happen during one of the key games that will become the talking point.

“It’s not just handballs – although they’re probably the biggest controversies – but some of the red cards being dished out are incredible.”

Rangers and Celtic set to fight in the best title race for years

The closely contested title race between Rangers and Celtic is a testament to the competitive spirit of Scottish football and it deserves to be decided on the pitch, not marred by controversy or questionable decisions from VAR.

With only a point separating the two teams and Gers having a game in hand, every moment of the race is crucial, making the impact of any contentious VAR rulings potentially devastating.

Controversies are not uncommon when these fierce rivals clash, but VAR should not add to the uncertainty or overshadow the players’ efforts and the fans’ passion.

The essence of the sport lies in the drama and excitement of live action, not in the scrutiny of video replays that can sometimes lead to contentious outcomes.

While VAR aims to ensure fairness, its implementation has been subject to criticism and inconsistency, raising concerns about its influence on crucial matches.

In such a closely fought battle, the focus should remain on which is the best team that can hold their nerve in tense situations and the upcoming Old Firm derby can give a good indication.

In other Rangers news, European league giants have started their summer transfer activity and have launched a bid for a first-team Gers player with an update shared on his decision.
