Rangers: Borna Barisic ‘very close’ to Ibrox exit as Trabzonspor make transfer move

Borna Barisic is “very close” to leaving Rangers and signing for Trabzonspor on a free transfer this summer, according to Sabah Spor.

Writing on their official Twitter account (11 March), the Turkish news outlet report that the 31-year-old left-back had previously been a target for the Super Lig club but a deal never materialised.

The player’s agent is set to travel to Turkey to discuss a deal in the coming days, and a permanent exit away from Ibrox now looks close to completion with his Gers contract due to expire at the end of the season.

Rangers set to clear out the deadwood

Philippe Clement has already made waves with his transfers at Ibrox, and the summer window is likely to be even more important for him.

Oscar Cortes was shining on the wing before injury ruled him out for two months, while Mo Diomande and Fabio Silva have been excellent additions to the squad.

Young left-back Jefte is likely to come in on a free transfer after a collapsed January move, but with Ridvan Yilmaz establishing himself as the first-choice option in that position it means that Barisic isn’t as important as he once was.

The Croatian is way past his best at this point in his career and giving him a new deal would just be a bad business decision from Rangers, because they would be tied down to a player who is depreciating.

It makes sense to move him on, it’s just a shame the club didn’t act accordingly to get a fee.

In other Rangers news, another attacker was ruled out for two months with a hamstring injury.
