Rangers: Ally McCoist shocked by Ross McCausland injury update
Ally McCoist has admitted he was surprised to see Ross McCausland named on the bench for Rangers for their Europa League draw with Benfica on 7 March.
Philippe Clement made two changes to his starting lineup for the 2-2 draw, with the Northern Ireland international taken out of the starting line-up following his withdrawal at the weekend after rough treatment from Motherwell.
But the winger was named on the bench after training with the squad on the eve of the game, and McCoist told TNT Sports (7 March, 19:55) that he expected McCausland to be missing for a “couple of weeks”.
“I’m surprised McCausland is on the bench,” he said.
“I thought the way he came off at the weekend, it was a sore one. I thought we might not see him for a couple of weeks.
“So that’s good news, obviously.”
Major injury boost for Rangers
There are already more than enough injury problems at Rangers that mean there is absolutely no reason for the boss to risk anyone else unnecessarily.
Youngster McCausland got kicked off the park against Motherwell and most expected him to be out for a little while after a horror tackle that went unpunished.
But youth is a great thing and his powers of recovery were proven as he came on as a very late substitute in the game, proving that he was in fact fit and available to play had the manager needed him to be.

With Oscar Cortes ruled out for two months plus Abdallah Sima, Danilo, Todd Cantwell, Kieran Dowell and Rabbi Matondon all on the sidelines too the Ibrox club really can’t afford to be without any more attackers.
It’s a huge boost that he is available to play, even if it is only from the bench for a while until he’s fully recovered, because the squad is already down to its bare bones.
