Rangers: Chris Sutton destroys Celtic chief Peter Lawwell in new Ibrox title admission

Celtic chief Peter Lawwell may as be “handing Rangers the title” if the current chaos continues at Parkhead for the foreseeable future, according to Chris Sutton.

Philippe Clement’s side currently sit top of the Scottish Premiership table, two points ahead of Brendan Rodgers’ Hoops after 26 matches, following their impressive 3-0 win over St Johnstone last time out.

While Sutton has insisted that everything is still to play for between now and the end of the season, he has slammed Celtic for the recent unrest at Parkhead, suggesting the Gers may not have the upper hand in the title race.

Writing for the Daily Record on Saturday (24 February) he said: “I did note Lawwell saying that there remains a long way to go, all to play for and it being about uniting behind the team for these purposes. That I do agree with wholeheartedly for their sake. They have to draw a line under the chaos and unrest.

“If it rumbles on, they’d be as well handing Rangers the title right now. Rodgers has spent his entire two-spell Celtic career as the hunted. Now he’s going to be the hunter.

“Celtic simply cannot afford to be making any more mistakes at this stage of the season. Rangers aren’t perfect, yet Philippe Clement is getting a tune out of them.

“I keep hearing people say that Celtic still have an upper hand because they have players who have been over the course before, but the issue is the ones in the squad who now have not.

“It is not lost. Far from it. But it will take a unified effort and it is time to draw a line under what has gone before. That can come May, give the right and definitive title answer.”

Can Rangers beat Celtic to the Scottish Premiership title?

The feeling around Ibrox at the moment is much better than the one around Celtic Park, with an element of confidence and excitement surrounding Clement’s side that hasn’t been felt for years in the blue half of Glasgow.

As Sutton suggested, the Gers haven’t been perfect, but they have found a way to consistently win matches and help banish the tag of serial losers which has followed them around for most of their recent history.

Philippe Clement has overseen an excellent turnaround at Rangers.

But, nothing has been won in the Premiership yet and plenty can change between now and May. Rangers haven’t been handed a title and they have to keep winning to keep the pressure on Brendan Rodgers’ Hoops until the end of the season.

This title race is more than likely going to go down to the wire and the Gers simply cannot take their foot off of the gas now as they look to kick on and ruffle a few feathers this season.
