Rangers: Celtic slip £100m+ reveal under blanket as Ibrox news circles round media

Celtic slipped a £119.9million reveal under the blanket as the media focus was on Rangers drawing Benfica in the Europa League, according to Stephen McGowan.

Writing on page 109 of the Scottish Daily Mail’s print edition on Saturday (23 February), the journalist said the Hoops’ interim financial results came out a week later than usual, showing a modest drop in the bank balance from £72.3million to £67.3million.

He added that if the Parkhead club were half as effective at burying chances as they were financial updates, they would be “running away with the league and holding their own in Europe” as they battle it out with the Gers for the title this season.

Rangers performing better than Celtic where it counts

There is no doubt that Celtic have been performing well financially in recent years, but there are question marks around how well that money has been spent over the past year or so.

With Brendan Rodgers currently struggling to get a tune out of his players and some of Rangers’ recent signings hitting form, they are better placed than their Old Firm rivals at this moment in time.

While the Gers sit top of the SPL table, they are also through to the last 16 of the Europa League, where they have now learned they will face Portuguese side Benfica.

Rangers are performing better than Celtic on the pitch.

The Hoops, however, were dumped out of Europe after a poor showing and the pressure is on Rodgers to deliver at Parkhead following his return to the club last summer.

The Northern Irishman is up against a steely competitor in Philippe Clement after he’s overseen a dramatic turnaround in fortunes at Ibrox after just a few months at the helm.
