Rangers: Alexander Smith transfer could be blocked amid The Athletic update – Football Lawyer

Rangers sensation Alexander Smith could be blocked from making a move away from Ibrox after an update has emerged, according to Andrew Visnovsky.

The Athletic journalist Tom Bogert tweeted on Thursday (22 February) that the “highly rated” 15-year-old, who is an American and Scottish dual-national, is attracting interest from Premier League and MLS clubs.

Responding to the tweet, football lawyer Visnovsky said it’s not likely that the midfielder could transfer to a US academy before he turns 18 without a non-football-related move by his parents, but that he can transfer to an English club when he turns 16.

Rangers will want to keep hold of Alexander Smith

There will no doubt be some concern at Rangers as it appears as though several clubs outside of Scotland are eyeing a move for Smith.

The teenager is clearly highly thought of at Ibrox and he is exactly the type of player they want to see progress into their first team down the line.

The Gers are looking to make more of a conscious effort to create a pathway for their brightest academy talents to forge a successful future for themselves at the club.

But in order to do that over a number of years, they need to keep those players in Glasgow and be able to use those potential success stories as a way of getting more young talents through the door.

It doesn’t look as though anything can happen with Smith until he turns 16, but the Light Blues will no doubt be having conversations about how they can keep hold of him.

In other Rangers news, a Gers loanee has now seen his work permit issues cleared to make his debut.
