Rangers: Chris Sutton fires brand new Ibrox jibe after Premiership win v St Johnstone

Rangers’ return to the top of the Scottish Premiership has not brought a smile to Chris Sutton’s face after the former Celtic star “unfortunately” saw Philippe Clement’s side beat St Johnstone.

Clement’s men overtook the Bhoys for the first time this season with a 3-0 win at McDiarmid Park on Sunday (18 February) thanks to a first Gers goal from Mohamed Diomande and a brace from James Tavernier.

While a smile had returned to Sutton’s face following the fixture, the Sky Sports pundit was quick to assure journalist Dominic King that it had nothing to do with the Light Blues’ recent success under the Belgian’s management.

Speaking on the It’s All Kicking Off! podcast (19 February, 1:45) he said: “Busy weekend, busy few days. I took the Rangers game in yesterday and they unfortunately won. Top of the league.”

King quickly replied: “It’s nice to see a smile on your face anyway, the fact that I’m here and Ian [Ladyman] is up a mountain.”

Sutton hit back saying: “That [the smile] wasn’t because of Rangers going top of the league!”

Can Rangers beat Celtic to the Premiership title?

The tide in Glasgow has turned massively since Clement arrived at Ibrox and the Belgian has transformed Rangers from the tough spot they found themselves in under Michael Beale to the potential favourites for the title this term.

Rangers have recruited well this January to give themselves the best chance of lifting more silverware before the end of the campaign and their recent results have shown that they are more than capable of putting a good run of form together.

Celtic supporters and pundits, like Sutton, won’t like what they are seeing at Ibrox at the moment, but it is clear that those on the green half of Glasgow now view the Light Blues as a genuine threat again.

Whether or not the Gers will have enough to keep this run going until the end of the season remains to be seen and the title race will almost certainly go down to the wire, but at the moment Clement’s side is in the driving seat.
