Rangers: Chris Sutton shares ‘phenomenal’ Ibrox title verdict in ‘complacent’ Celtic admission

Rangers’ comeback in the title race with Celtic has been “phenomenal” so far and Philippe Clement won’t now allow his side to become complacent, according to Chris Sutton.

The Light Blues moved level with Brendan Rodgers’ side at the top of the Scottish Premiership with a 3-1 win over Ross County on Wednesday (14 February) thanks to a brace from Cyriel Dessers and a late goal from John Souttar.

While Sutton has admitted that the momentum lies with Clement’s Gers, he has refused to rule Celtic out of the title race, even suggesting that Rangers’ title charge could “unravel quickly” in the coming weeks.

Speaking on BBC Sport’s Football Daily (14 February, 19:10) he said: “From Rangers point of view, they’ve built momentum, they’ve got that belief. I think the fanbase really believes but it is level pegging at this moment in time.

“It only takes a lapse or two, I think at the weekend Celtic have Kilmarnock and you’re not sort of sure what Celtic team you’re getting at this moment in time. Performances haven’t quite been there, but Rangers have got a tricky tie away at St Johnstone and it only takes one moment to upset things.

“There’s a title race on and I think it will go to the wire. Grumbles are going on at Celtic that the fanbase isn’t happy. The one thing that Rangers can’t afford to do, and I don’t think they will because the manager won’t allow them to is get complacent.

“We have seen them get complacent in previous seasons, but this can unravel quickly either way. Rangers certainly haven’t cracked it and Celtic, their title dreams aren’t over.

“Rangers comeback is pretty phenomenal, they’re a different team, a different attitude and a serious manager.”

Will Rangers become complacent in Celtic title race?

It is clear that at this moment in time, Rangers are in a better place to go and lift the title this season, but we have already seen this season that things can change very quickly in football.

With both Old Firm rivals only separated by goals scored, it is effectively a case of who will blink first between now and the end of the season. While the Gers are in a better place right now, that could begin to unravel at St Johnstone on the weekend.

Philippe Clement would have been frustrated by the lack of impact Nicolas Raskin made for Rangers

Clement has insisted that he isn’t focused on what his Glasgow neighbours are doing, with the Belgian instead looking to keep his side’s good run of form going. If Rangers maintain this momentum, they will likely pip Celtic to the title.

However, this title race will almost certainly go down to the wire and the Gers need to improve their Old Firm record if they want to be sitting on top of the tree come the end of the season.
