Barry Ferguson blown away by Rangers ‘match-winner’ Todd Cantwell in Philippe Clement verdict

Rangers have managed to bring the best out of Todd Cantwell in a more advanced position and he can be Philippe Clement’s “match-winner” in the title race, according to Barry Ferguson.

The Englishman has been in impressive form in the last few weeks and after a strong display against Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership, he had a positive impact on proceedings when he was introduced in the second half against Ayr United.

While Cantwell had been the subject of plenty of criticism earlier in the season, particularly in the Old Firm clashes, Ferguson believes the 25-year-old could single-handily help the Gers towards the title this season.

Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show (12 January, 20:45) he said: “In terms of Cantwell, that’s where I want to see him do his damage, further up the field in the final third. That’s what he’s done in the last few weeks and that’s his favoured position just behind the striker.

“He can affect the game when he’s further up the pitch. He is a match-winner, there’s no doubt about that.”

Todd Cantwell can bring the title back to Rangers

When things weren’t going as well at Ibrox, Cantwell was one of the most criticised players in the Rangers changing room as there was always a feeling that the Englishman could be doing more to help the Light Blues on the big occasions.

But in the last few weeks, the tide has started to turn around the creative midfielder and he is once again being viewed as one of the most important players in Clement’s side.

At his best, Cantwell can turn a game on its head with one single action, whether that be by skipping past his marker or threading a ball between two players. What Clement and Rangers need is for the 25-year-old to reach that level week in and week out.

Hopefully, the midfielder can keep up this recent run of form and replicate it when the Old Firm derby rolls around again, otherwise, the critics will emerge once again.
