Rangers news: Ex chief fumes at recent controversy, calls for immediate change

Several clubs, including Rangers, have called out SPFL Chairman Murdoch MacLennan over concerns regarding the handling of an Independent Governance report.

According to Football Scotland [8 February] Aberdeen, Motherwell, Livingston, St Mirren and St Johnstone are the other clubs and they’re demanding transparency, alleging that MacLennan publicly misrepresented the report’s findings.

Former SPFL CEO Roger Mitchell weighed in on the matter and has called on MacLennan to step down from his position immediately.

He took to Twitter to write: “I wrote a book whose main theme is about the appalling governance/leadership in much of sport’s governing bodies.

“If I personally received a letter like today’s, as SPFL chairman, I’d resign before the day was out. Out of pride. Like I did when SPLTV didn’t get 11 votes.

“You need to look macro and not on micro incidents.

“The Cinch stuff, losing that case, is bad. But being accused of altering evidence is dramatic for a chairperson of any kind.

“Murdoch needs to go this afternoon.”

Rangers deserve this change

Rangers and other clubs have expressed serious concerns about governance and transparency and MacLennan’s resignation might help restore trust and confidence in the SPFL’s leadership, particularly among clubs and supporters who feel their concerns have not been adequately addressed.

With MacLennan gone, there could be a reshaping of the SPFL leadership, potentially leading to changes in decision-making processes and priorities.

Gers might hope for a more transparent and inclusive approach to governance under new leadership.

MacLennan’s departure from the helm could prompt a broader discussion about governance reforms within the SPFL, which could address Rangers’ concerns and lead to a more equitable and transparent league structure.

For Mitchell to say such strong words means that there really is something to the claims of the aggrieved clubs.

While MacLennan’s resignation might initially create some uncertainty, it could also present an opportunity for positive change and improvement within the SPFL which would benefit all the clubs.
