Ally McCoist slams Ross McCausland for ‘ball-watching’ in Rangers 3-2 win v Real Betis

Rangers attacker Ross McCausland was caught “ball-watching” during the encounter between Rangers and Real Betis.

That is according to Ally McCoist, who slammed the youngster for his role in Betis’s opening goal in the Europa League clash on Thursday (14 December).

The Spanish side were hosting the Gers in the final matchday of the competition, with the visitors winning the clash 3-2.

“Rangers have got a problem down their own right-hand side,” McCoist said live on TNT Sports 3 (8.57pm, 14 December). “McCausland did brilliantly for the first goal and had a good first half.

“But listen, he’s ball-watching there. You get away with that if you’re 20 yards in the opposition half. When you’re in your own half, you cannot let people run off you, particularly with the quality of Miranda with that left foot.”

Rangers

Switched off

Rangers simply could not afford to switch off for one second against Betis, given both the quality of the Spanish side and indeed what was at stake. At just 20 years old, McCausland is, of course, very young and has plenty to learn at this stage of his career.

And that moment against Betis will certainly provide the attacker with an important learning curve, with McCausland needing to carry out defensive duties as well as attacking duties in his role under Philippe Clement. But not many Rangers defenders shone in the big clash on the road, with Betis carving the visitors open at will.

However, despite their attacking threat, it was the travelling side who emerged victorious, with Kemar Roofe netting the winner in the 78th minute.

Abdallah Sima and Cyriel Dessers also found the back of the net, with Juan Miranda and Ayoze Perez scoring for the Spanish outfit.
