Finance Expert: Rangers can not spend as much in transfer windows after Dave King message

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Rangers...

Dan Plumley has insisted that Rangers may not be able to spend as much in the next couple of transfer windows if they want to be self-sufficient.

It comes after an old message from Dave King emerged ahead of the AGM where he said five years ago that Rangers would be self-sustainable in two, something that hasn’t happened.

The finance expert admitted that the Ibrox club could be self-sufficient but the trade-off would mean a lack of spending, something Rangers can’t afford to do if they want to be successful.

“It doesn’t appear to be [close],” he exclusively told Ibrox News.

“I will just context that with the situation in Scottish football and the situation at Rangers, we know the ability to generate revenue through the league itself is not where people think it should be, the broadcast deals are not as high as in other leagues in Europe, they are battling there internally which puts the emphasis then of revenue generation and finance on matchday is always going to be strong, commercial and then into Europe.

That becomes the big kicking point and we have seen that with Rangers throughout the years and when you go back to the finances of that, I think that’s the trade-off between this kind of financial performance and sporting performance that we’re never going to balance.

Rangers could be a self-sustainable club, absolutely, part of the trade-off of that is they probably won’t be able to spend as much in the transfer market for a couple of years, or they won’t be able to invest to really go for it in Europe if they need to, and that’s not Rangers fault because the gap is so big between them and other European clubs, so if you are trying to compete and they want to, that is the right thing to do but there has to be a realist approach to that.

They will need investment as the finances in Scottish football are not going to get them there, so it has to be that trade-off, it could be a self-sufficient club, but to compete at that top level, they need to invest and you can see that play out over the last few years since that statement was made.”

In other Rangers news, Plumley has insisted that the club can argue they have missed out after a £900m+ deal was signed off
