Andy Halliday slams ‘petulant Todd Cantwell as Sky Sports reporter provides new information

Andy Halliday hit out at “petulant” Todd Cantwell after the Rangers ace took to social media to criticise the officials in Sunday’s (12 November) 2-0 win at Livingston.

Cantwell was unhappy at being cautioned shortly after being brought on as a substitute for a foul and shove on Livingston defender James Penrice.

The former England Under-21 international shared images on his personal Instagram account of Penrice appearing to kick out at him, with the incident going unpunished.

Cantwell questioned why VAR did not check the incident, but Sky Sports reporter Gordon Duncan, speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard [13 November], says the video technology would have been used.

“Just for accuracy, because we hear that a lot – I was talking to someone about a completely different incident – VAR looks at pretty much everything,” Duncan is quoted as saying by the Daily Record [13 November].

“All stuff like that. I think we need to fall into that trap because the referee doesn’t go to the monitor.”

In response, Hearts player Halliday said: “Was there enough force? I see it as more petulant than anything from both.

“I think he can be aggrieved that it wasn’t a yellow but I’m not sure about a red card. I would say two yellows would have been enough.”

Aggrieved

This is not the first time Cantwell has been labelled “petulant”, with Kenny Miller also doing so over the weekend for his reaction to this same incident.

There is no doubt that the Englishman has an edge to his game, but it has certainly not held him back up until this point.

Besides, Penrice did appear to deliberately kick out at Cantwell and made contact with the midfielder’s left shin, so he was right to feel aggrieved.

It is easy to say Cantwell should have just brushed it off and continued, but it is surely down to the referee and his officials to clamp down on incidents such as this.

As it is, they clearly did not feel it was worthy of further punishment, and it is not like any harm was done as the Gers cruised to all three points at the Tony Macaroni Arena.

As for Cantwell, he now has a couple of weeks to rest up ready to go again against Aberdeen on 26 November.

In other Rangers news, a Gers player has opened up on criticism he faced from fans early in his Ibrox career.
