Sam Jewell to stay at Brighton after rejecting Rangers interest in technical director role

Rangers have been dealt a blow in their hunt for a new technical director after Brighton’s Sam Jewell rejected their approach, according to The Athletic.

Writing on their official website (20 October), the reliable news outlet claim that Jewell is happy at Brighton and has decided to turn down an approach from the Ibrox club.

Rangers have denied claims that they approached him for the role after Fabrizio Romano reported that a formal approach had been made.

“Brighton’s head of recruitment Sam Jewell has turned down interest from Glasgow Rangers in becoming their technical director,” they wrote.

“The 34-year-old is happy at Brighton, where he has worked his way up to his current role after joining the club from Swindon as under-21s recruitment manager in May 2016.”

Embarrassing

Rangers have tried to do the old “we didn’t want him anyway” thing with Jewell and it’s back fired horribly on them.

James Bisgrove made it very clear that there were “live talks” for the director of football role and behind-the-scenes improvements, and Jewell was obviously one of the top candidates that they wanted.

However it was no surprise that Jewell has turned them down since he is currently the head of recruitment at Brighton and they have one of the most exciting projects in world football at the moment.

He’s in a great place in his career and Rangers are an absolute mess at the moment, so he’d be crazy to stake his reputation for what many would consider to be a backwards move or sideways at best.

Rangers, right now, aren’t the club that we want to be and that shows by the fact we can’t attract the right people behind the scenes to get us back where we want to be.
