Neil Warnock shares ‘never say never’ stance on Rangers job amid Beale sack pressure

Former Huddersfield manager Neil Warnock admitted he would never say never when it comes to the Rangers job amid pressure on Michael Beale, just days after leaving the Championship side.

Warnock left the Terriers on 18 September after what has been described as plans for internal overhaul were revealed [The Guardian, 18 September], and the boss has hinted a move to Glasgow could be on the cards.

This comment has come at a time when the pressure on Beale’s job has eased slightly, but there is still plenty of speculation that any poor result could see the Englishman let go.

Warnock was live on talkSPORT with host Alan Brazil [27 September], discussing the process of leaving Huddersfield as he revealed: “The actual day that I was told that they were going to bring someone in I was actually moving apartment so you could see I wasn’t expecting it.”

Brazil then retorted: “Where were you moving to? Govan? Because that job’s coming up soon.”

This comment drew the reply from Warnock in which he admitted: “To be honest, before this one came up again I was doing my shows and I enjoyed them but the buzz I have had since coming back.

“You just get that buzz so you never say never. But obviously, it has to be something that really whets my appetite.”

Surely not

You’d like to think that, despite his experience and respect in the game, Warnock would not even make a five-man shortlist of possible Beale replacements should the latter lose his place in the dugout at Ibrox.

As much as his managerial quality is clear and certainly something to be marvelled at, the club should be looking in a more positive direction. Names like Graham Potter and John Eustace who have previously been mooted offer much better and more progressive targets.

For now, though, Beale remains in the hot seat at Rangers and will be doing his level best to overturn the seemingly endless criticisms being directed at him. All he can do is continue to win games and hope that is enough to win the trust of the fans back.

A victory in Europe against Real Betis was the first step to recovery, and a win tonight [27 September] against Livingston in the League Cup quarter-final is another must-win game for the boss.
