Lee McCulloch stunned by ‘tremendous’ Rangers footage v Motherwell live on BBC

Lee McCulloch was left stunned by the move to set up the Rangers goal in the first half of the victory over Motherwell on Sunday (24 September).

Speaking on Sportscene on Sunday (35:56), the pundit said the build-up to what proved to be the only goal from forward Cyriel Dessers in the 1-0 win at Ibrox was “tremendous”.

But he added that the Gers were “lucky” after a shot from Rabbi Matondo hit the 28-year-old Nigerian and bounced into the back of the net.

“But here a little bit of magic from (Jose) Cifuentes,” said McCullough. “He can go wide again, but if you look at Scott Wright, he’s just pealed in and what a great touch that is, taking the midfield four out with the pass.

“It’s a tremendous touch, (Sam) Lammers half-turn, yes, they get a bit lucky there with Matondo. I don’t know if that’s going in, but obviously, it takes a deflection from Dessers, who is going in to gamble on it.

“Very, very fortunate, but it’s tremendous play in the build-up is my point and, obviously, fortunate to get a goal at the end of it.”

Points on the board

It really wasn’t a great performance from Rangers, as many believe – including Michael Beale – that they didn’t really deserve to win the game.

There were very few moments of quality on display from the Gers throughout the afternoon against Motherwell aside from the build-up to the goal.

The Steelmen had a number of decent chances to level the scoreline up and were unfortunate to not come away from Ibrox with a result after their performance.

While Beale will have been hoping for more from his side on the back of the victory over Real Betis, there are still positives that can be taken.

The main thing is that it’s some much-needed points on the board for the Light Blues, alongside a goal for Dessers and another clean sheet, so they can look to build on that moving forward.

In other Rangers news, the club are considering sanctioning the loan exit of one player.
