Ally McCoist hails ‘remarkable’ James Tavernier moment in Rangers defeat to PSV

Ally McCoist hailed James Tavernier for his “remarkable” goalscoring ability after netting again for Rangers in their heavy defeat to PSV on Wednesday [30 August].

With the Gers 2-0 down on the night at the Philips Stadion, and 4-2 behind on aggregate, Tavernier gave the Gers some temporary hope by converting Sam Lammers’ cross at the back post.

PSV went on to run riot as they sealed a 7-3 win over the two legs and advanced to the group stage of the Champions League at their opponents’ expense.

Analysing Tavernier’s strike as part of TNT Sports‘ commentary team, McCoist said: “He’s unbelievable, he really is. He’s remarkable.

“We saw his goal at the weekend, which was absolutely fantastic.

“You talk about forwards arriving at the back post at the right time – he does it as well as any centre-forward I’ve ever seen in my life.”

Goals galore

McCoist, a striker during his playing days, is certainly well positioned to dish out praise to Tavernier.

The Gers legend certainly has a point, as Tavernier now has four goals this season alone.

Since arriving at Ibrox in July 2015, meanwhile, he has scored over 100 goals – not bad for a player who plays predominantly as a full-back.

After scoring a stunning goal from range at Ross County last weekend, Tavernier’s latest finish against PSV was from just a few yards out.

Todd Cantwell dinked the ball over the top to Lammers, who in turn played it towards the back post for his captain to convert via a deflection.

Rangers

Whether it is timing his runs to perfection, keeping his composure from set-pieces or simply thumping the ball home from range, Tavernier really does have every type of finish in his arsenal.

Unfortunately for him and Rangers, we will not get to see any more of that in the Champions League this season.
