BBC pundit savages Kieran Dowell after what he did in Rangers v PSV Champions League qualifier

Andy Townsend has savaged Kieran Dowell for what he did in the dying stages of the 2-2 between Rangers and PSV Eindhoven.

The 25-year-old came off the bench at Ibrox and found himself on the edge of the penalty area and he attempted a long ranger that missed the target.

In Townsend’s view, had he passed the ball there, he could’ve set up a goal-scoring opportunity that might have won the game for the hosts.

Speaking on the UEFA world feed, the BBC pundit said (22/08, 22:53), “That’s a waste. He got a bit excited there. Wasted chance when they could be pushing for the winner.”

Tad harsh

Townsend cannot be critical if a player who’s decent with taking long shots has a crack at it when everyone is expecting him to pass.

The ball could’ve got deflected and found its way to a Rangers attacker in the box or even in the back of the net.

It wasn’t even a clear-cut chance where if he would’ve passed it, it was a certain goal so this was undoubtedly harsh from him.

Dowell’s a good player who’s still adapting to life at Ibrox and he’s only going to get better in the coming weeks and months.

Rangers did well all game and would be kicking themselves for allowing Luuk de Jong to equalise right after Rabbi Matondo gave them the lead.

It remains to be seen how the second leg goes as it’s almost impossible to separate the two sides after this game and that’s going to be a cracker of a contest as well.
