Cyriel Dessers makes new Rangers admission after transfers

Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers believes that the new forward options at Ibrox will benefit one another as they spend more time together on the pitch.

The Nigerian forward scored his first goal in the Blue of Rangers in Wednesday (9 August) night’s 2-1 Champions League qualifying win over Servette and featured in a new-look front-three alongside Sam Lammers and Danilo.

Dessers was one of many players to struggle in the Scottish Premiership season opener against Kilmarnock at Rugby Park but has suggested that only time with his new striking partners will help the new signings find their form together.

Speaking following the 2-1 win, via STV News (10 August) Dessers said: “I liked it a lot, together with Sam, Danilo and then the guys coming off the bench. I think they’re all really good players and then it’s easy to play together with them and we get a lot of freedom from our gaffer and we need to use it.

“This partnership, this relationship has to grow and I’m sure it will grow. I think we can we can benefit a lot from each other. If we can grow as a partnership and hopefully we can both (Dessers and Danilo) benefit from it, both score goals and be important for the team.”

Advantages of not qualifying

There aren’t usually many teams that are happy to have to play extra games to reach the Champions League and while Michael Beale won’t be thrilled with the risk of missing out on Europe’s top table, it does have its advantages.

Having made nine signings this summer, Rangers need as many games as possible under his belt to ensure that the team begin to click with one another and these Champions League qualifiers provide that extra platform for the new players.

Pre-season friendlies can be helpful for players, but the pressure of trying to achieve European competition adds that pressure that can’t be achieved in friendly matches and it seemed to get more out of all three forwards on Wednesday night.

The only issue for Rangers is there isn’t too much time to get up to speed having already given Celtic a three-point head start in the race for the Premiership title and they cannot afford to let that margin get any bigger, especially this early in the campaign.

Hopefully, the Light Blues can get their domestic season up and running against Livingston at Ibrox on Saturday (12 August).
