Rangers bank new windfall after unusual transfer twist – Finance Expert

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Rangers...

Dan Plumley has insisted that the Rangers and Bayern Munich saga over Malik Tillman is “unusual” but it shows how intricate transfer deals are now.

It was widely reported that Bayern paid £1million to cancel to option-to-buy, as well as 10% of any further sales with Premier League clubs interested.

Plumley admitted that this was the best outcome that Rangers could have hoped for after not signing the American, with the art of negotiating highlighted.

“It’s certainly unusual,” he exclusively told Ibrox News.

“It does now show you the really intricate deals that are taking place, and how a lot of clubs can benefit from that as well.

There is a benefit there to Rangers, it’s unusual, but I think that is also the art of negotiating which becomes really important, transfers can play out in a number of ways so part of the reason it has played out well is because he’s played really well and his value has gone up.

If he hadn’t performed well, then it may not have happened this way. There are some really intricate clauses that get put in these days and that raises a few eyebrows when you see them. If that is how it has played out, then that is the best benefit they could have hoped for.”

Despite it being Ross Wilson who likely signed off on this deal last summer, this twist may show the power that James Bisgrove brings to the table in negotiations.

Bayern will not want to have paid this sum, but Rangers have benefitted and have banked new money for a player who wasn’t even there’s in the first place.

In other Rangers news, Plumley has insisted that the club can argue they have missed out after a £900m+ deal was signed off elsewhere
