Michael Beale is wowed by ‘top footballer’ John Souttar, he will play his part in Rangers rebuild

Rangers boss Michael Beale has once again dished out fulsome praise to John Souttar after the central defender put in another impressive display in the 3-0 win over St Mirren on Saturday, as reported by the Rangers Review.

On the final day of the Scottish Premiership season for the Gers, the Scotland international provided a significant presence in defence as his reputation continues to soar.

Beale described his player as a “top footballer” as he backed him to come back over the summer to stake a real claim to feature in his team.

The Gers boss provided a clear indication of what he thinks of Souttar, on and off the pitch, when asked if the end of the season had come too soon for him.

“He’ll probably get another couple of games if he’s involved with the national team,” he said.

“His wife is due so it could be a nice summer, things seem to be coming together for John and I’m delighted for him as a man.

“He’ll come back pre-season, we’ve toyed a little bit with a back three at times. John has the qualities to step in, cover around people, and has been blighted by long-term injuries, John Souttar is a top footballer.”

Serious potential

At 26, Souttar has probably not fulfilled what he is truly capable of, over the last few seasons as he featured for Hearts prior to his move to Ibrox.

In that time, he has also made a breakthrough in the Scotland squad with Steve Clarke known to be an admirer of his.

Rangers could yet get the best out of the player when he should be approaching the best years of his career and if he can avoid the injury pitfalls that have plagued him previously, he has serious potential to make an excellent contribution to Beale’s team in the months and years ahead.

He will be an early favourite to line up on the first day of the new season, with Connor Goldson rated doubtful. Two new central defenders are likely to arrive, as well as the departure of Filip Helander as the squad prepares for significant change for the new challenges ahead.

In other Rangers news, Jack Butland provided a one-word response when asked if he’s coming to Ibrox this summer.
