Rangers fans responsible for surprise Antonio Colak Goal of the Season award
Late on Sunday evening, it was revealed that Rangers’ Goal of the Season award had been won by Antonio Colak for his strike against PSV Eindhoven in August, as relayed by the official club website.
The news was received with understandable surprise by many fans online but it was actually a supporter poll that awarded the decision to the Croatian international.
Colak netted home and away against PSV but it was the crucial goal in the Netherlands that secured the Gers’ passage through to the Champions League group stages, which received the recognition.

It was certainly an important moment rather than a strike of high quality, as stated in the official report from the club event.
“There was plenty of competition for this one, but the award, courtesy of a supporters’ vote went to Antonio Colak’s winner against PSV Eindhoven back on August 24,” it said.
“While Gers have perhaps scored more aesthetically-pleasing goals, few if any have been more important, with the strike taking Gers through to the UEFA Champions League for the first time in 12 years.”
Better options
Whilst it is fine to acknowledge the importance of the goal scored by Colak against PSV back in August, it doesn’t quite feel right that it received the accolade.
Goal of the season should be awarded to a very high-quality strike of individual or team brilliance, this one was neither despite what was at stake.
Even Colak has scored better goals this season, among his 17 for the club to date, in his debut season at Ibrox.
Then there was the likes of the blockbuster free kick scored by James Tavernier in the recent 3-2 loss to Celtic at Parkhead.
That was exactly the type of stunning effort that would be a more worthy winner of the title of goal of the season but the award went the way of Colak due to the fans’ vote.
It comes at a time when the German-Croatian’s future at the club is very uncertain due to the significant squad rebuild that will take place over the coming weeks and months at Ibrox.
