Danny Wilson reacts to ‘unrealistic’ £2m Rangers transfer update in bid to sign Auston Trusty

Danny Wilson believes Rangers would do well to sign Arsenal defender Auston Trusty for £2million after the 24-year-old was linked with a move to Ibrox.

Trusty, who spent the 2022/23 season on loan with Birmingham City, is wanted by Michael Beale to bolster the Light Blues’ defence (Daily Mail, 8 May).

Wilson, who played with Trusty in the MLS, feels Rangers’ £2million price tag is “unrealistic” at present.

Rangers

“I saw that the belief was Rangers could do a £2 million deal for him,” he told SunSport (10 May).

“Well, I’d think that would be an unrealistic price tag on Auston for what you’d be getting.

“He’s 24-years-old, he’s just played 44 games in the Championship this year and 50-plus over the course of the season having also gone straight from Colorado Rapids to play in England.

“So, he’s not really had a break – it shows the fitness of the guy, he doesn’t miss many games, if any.

“So, I think someone who has played that well – winning a few supporters’ player of the year awards – it would be tough to get him for £2 million.

“If Rangers were to get him for that I reckon it would be a steal. I can’t see it happening at that level.”

Level up

Trusty would be a quality addition to Beale’s defence and would certainly provide competition to the likes of Connor Goldson and Ben Davies. The centre-back pairing have been somewhat comfortable in recent weeks. The duo know they are the first choice with there being no real adequate competition behind them.

Beale needs strength in depth. If a certain player isn’t performing, he should be taken out of the side. Whether they can land Trusty for that price tag is up for debate. The 24-year-old has just swept up the player of the year awards at Birmingham City and will be attracting plenty of interest.

The wheels are now certainly in motion when it comes to Rangers’ summer business. Dujon Sterling is set to complete his move from Chelsea, Kieran Dowell is close to an agreement and Jack Butland is also in talks. It’s a positive start for Beale on the free-agent front. Next, the Gers boss will be looking to thrash out one or two transfer fees when the window opens.
