Rangers ‘raft of new players’ forecast with Michael Beale in the market as Alfredo Morelos transfer update emerges

Alfredo Morelos is now “expected to leave” Rangers and Michael Beale in the market for a “raft of new players” according to Mail+.

The Colombian striker is one of a host of the current Ibrox first-team whose contracts are set to expire at the end of the season, and with Burnley making their move on Ryan Kent there are going to be gaps to fill.

The manager is therefore after a group of new arrivals to restock and rejuvenate his squad ahead of the new season, with Morelos alone making 41 appearances this season.

Mail+ reports: “With striker Alfredo Morelos also expected to leave, Ibrox boss Michael Beale is in the market for a raft of new players this summer.”

Changing of the guard

The door had theoretically been left open for Morelos to extend his stay in Glasgow but a departure has seemed likely for some months.

The striker had been in talks over a new deal earlier this season, but they were shelved during a disciplinary dispute with former boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst [Sky Sports, 24 August] and never reached a conclusion when they were picked back up.

Beale had publicly admitted he wanted Kent and Ryan Jack but told Viaplay on 12 March, via the Daily Record that he wanted more from Morelos, saying: “Alfredo’s situation is slightly different.”

A resolution with Jack is yet to materialise but it looks like both Kent and Morelos are on their way out now, and with Scott Arfield and Filip Helander likely to follow, plus both Allan McGregor and Steven Davis possibly retiring, Beale needs bodies through the door.

If most or all leave then that will be hundreds of appearances, goals, and assists that need replacing, and while it is long past due that Rangers stopped relying on aging veterans it won’t be simple to find the right new names.

Financially the easy part is letting the old guard walk out the door, but putting together deals to bring in their new generation will be a tougher job, and Ross Wilson’s departure is bound to have an effect no matter how much Beale tries to play it down.

In other Rangers news, an update has already emerged on one new target who only just cropped up.
