Sky Sports reporter Mark Benstead rages at Ibrox after ‘ridiculous’ VAR moment in Rangers win v St Mirren

Mark Benstead raged at the “ridiculous” VAR goal check as Rangers scored their fourth in the 5-2 win against St Mirren on Saturday (15 April).

The Gers were in fine form going forward at Ibrox, with Todd Cantwell, Fashion Sakala, Scott Arfield and Alfredo Morelos (two) getting the goals.

But Morelos’s second strike, set up by substitute Rabbi Matondo, was subject to a VAR check, much to the annoyance of Benstead.

“Rabbi Matondo, played in on the left-hand side,” said the Sky Sports reporter [15 April, 16:45].

“He got his head up well, spotted the run of Alfredo Morelos, picked him out just back from the penalty spot and he side-footed the ball home, right footed, there was a ridiculous VAR check after it, but the goal stands.”

Important win

Many Rangers supporters will strongly feel that there is very little to play for this season, with fierce rivals Celtic closing in on the Scottish Premiership title.

But the Gers can keep the pressure on as much as possible, and they have certainly done that with the three points against St Mirren.

The gap between Rangers and Celtic currently stands at nine points, with the latter travelling to Kilmarnock on Sunday (16 April).

The win at Ibrox won’t have gone exactly as Michael Beale would have planned, with the manager set to be disappointed to have conceded two goals on home soil.

But the ruthless attacking display will definitely please the man in the dugout, with Morelos showing he is still more than capable of finding the back of the net with his late brace.

It, therefore, wasn’t a classic Rangers win, but it was still an important one, with many players showing they deserve to be playing under Beale next season.

In other Rangers news, Ally McCoist has told the Gers that they don’t need to replace one senior figure who has recently left the club.
