Rangers: Jeff Stelling left laughing at Kris Boyd after James Tavernier penalty miss v St Mirren live on Sky Sports

Jeff Stelling was left in fits of laughter at the actions of Kris Boyd after Rangers captain James Tavernier had his penalty saved in the early stages of their clash against St Mirren.

The Gers were awarded a spot kick with seven minutes on the clock of their encounter at Ibrox on Saturday (15 April) after Nicolas Raskin was blatantly tripped by Alex Gogic.

Tavernier subsequently had his penalty saved by St Mirren goalkeeper Trevor Carson, and Stelling was left in hysterics live on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday as former Rangers player Boyd was celebrating in the studio, unaware that the spot-kick had been saved.

“The last thing you want to do when going to Ibrox is concede a penalty early on,” he said [15 April, 15:06].

“That’s just what has happened to St Mirren. Kris Boyd is celebrating, I haven’t told him they’ve missed it,” Stelling said with a huge laugh.

Shock

As Tavernier stepped up to the spot to take the penalty, just about everybody inside Ibrox would have expected the defender to find the back of the net.

After netting a quite superb free-kick against Celtic last weekend and notching up his 100th goal for the club in the process, the Gers captain had the opportunity to give Michael Beale’s side the perfect start.

However, Tavernier couldn’t have done much about the terrific stop of Carson.

Sometimes you just have to shrug off a miss such as this and give praise to the goalkeeper where it is deserved.

The 31-year-old has an impeccable record from the penalty spot for Rangers in the past and he will likely score many more in the future.

It wasn’t to be against St Mirren, and Boyd’s reaction in the Soccer Saturday studio highlights just how good the skipper usually is from 12 yards out.

In other Rangers news, Ross Wilson’s exit could put the club at a disadvantage in the transfer window.
