Rangers want to sign Olympiacos ace In-Beom Hwang after collapsed negotiations for Dimitris Kourbelis – Georgios Sideridis

Rangers want to sign Olympiacos midfielder In-Beom Hwang after their failed negotiations for Panathinaikos ace Dimitris Kourbelis, according to Georgios Sideridis.

The Gers were rejected by the Panathinaikos skipper earlier this week, with the midfielder instead opting to sign a new contract with his current club.

Because of that Rangers have now moved their attentions to Hwang, another midfielder who they watched in the Athens derby back in February on a scouting mission.

“After the collapse of the starting negotiations with Dimitris Kourbelis, Rangers FC are monitoring the In-Beom Hwang case from Olympiacos,” he wrote on his personal Twitter account (6 April).

“Rangers’ scouts had watched him on Olympiacs-Panathinaikos derby when they also watched Kourbelis.”

We said it at the time when Kourbelis’ rejection came to light that while it was a blow, it was the perfect time because it meant the club could switch targets quickly and not see their plans for the summer held up.

Considering the success that Asian players have had in the Scottish Premiership with Celtic over recent years, it’s possible the club have seen that and also seen Hwang’s performances in Greece and thought he would be a good match.

So far this season he has made 33 appearances and registered four goals and four assists, but it’s his excellent defensive mind that should make him a target.

He’s an experienced international player with over 40 caps for South Korea, and with a contract to run until 2025 he will likely cost a relatively moderate fee.

If Rangers are willing to do so, then they’d be bringing in a very talented player who would bolster a problem area who is in the prime of his career.
