Morgan Whittaker move from Swansea to Rangers may not be dead, does nobody any favours

Morgan Whittaker may yet make a deadline day move from Swansea to Rangers because it doesn’t suit anyone for him to stay, believes Andrew Dickson.

The South Wales club have staunchly held onto the 22-year-old winger after recalling him from his League One loan at Plymouth.

The Light Blues have reportedly made multiple bids to bring him in before the end of the window [Fabrizio Romano, 27 January], with Swans coach Russell Martin fairly vocal about how little chance they had, but Sky Sports producer Dickson believes it could still happen because the player wants the move.

Posting on Twitter Monday night (30 January) he wrote: “Must say I’m not totally convinced a Rangers deal for Morgan Whittaker is dead in the water ahead of tomorrow night.

“It does nobody any favours to have a young player not playing and wanting to be somewhere else. Still one to watch over the next 24 hours or so, I think.”

You can never say never on transfer deadline day when decision making goes wild and the pressure gets to sporting directors.

But having got this far with bids being rejected and Martin making quite clear that the clubs are too far apart in talks it does seem unlikely.

After finally making a breakthrough on Nicolas Raskin on Monday, just when it appeared that perhaps the midfielder would be stuck in limbo in Belgium for the second half of the season, there will be late hope of further additions before midnight.

But unlike Raskin and Todd Cantwell, whose contracts were both set to expire in the summer and weren’t in their clubs’ long-term plans, Martin wanted to play Whittaker this month already to rule out a transfer.

It didn’t happen in the end, with the player not in the right frame of mind to play amid the speculation, leaving the door open to some late fireworks.

But at this point it would certainly be a surprise to see him arrive at Ibrox during this transfer window.

In other Rangers news, a player has been whisked through the airport on arrival in Scotland ahead of a late January transfer.
