Rangers could sign new centre-back in final hours of January transfer window, ‘watch this space’ – Gordon Duncan

Rangers could be very busy in final hours of the transfer window and Michael Beale could look to make a last-ditch attempt to sign a new central defender, according to Sky Sports journalist Gordon Duncan.

The Gers have already signed Todd Cantwell from Norwich City and they are reportedly close to signing Nicolas Raskin from Standard Liege.

However, Ducan while reporting for Sky Sports [3:14 pm, Sky Sports News, 30 January], said that the Bears could force for a new signing before Tuesday’s (31 January) deadline, and fans better “watch this space”.

“[Beale] did also say on Saturday, Rangers fans might be interested to know, he was looking for another central defender,” said Duncan on Sky Sports.

“He was pressed on that today. ‘Would that happen before the end of the window?’ He said it was a picture that would probably be a bit clearer come the summer but maybe – just maybe – they could force something through before tomorrow’s deadline. I think Rangers fans need to watch this space on that one.”

Wow

It could be tremendous for the Bears if they can sign a centre-back on the deadline day.

Rangers have done extremely well to sign Cantwell this month who will be competing with the likes of Malik Tillman and Ryan Kent for the starting role.

He is a cracking talent and if he can recapture his old form, it will be seen as a transfer masterstroke from Beale.

Likewise, Raskin would be another tremendous signing for the club. He is a stylish midfielder who will bring much-needed flair to the middle of the park.

Rangers

On paper, Rangers can do without signing a centre-back. John Souttar is expected to be back shortly, and Beale will have wealth of options to choose from.

However, Filip Helander is likely to leave next summer, while no decision has been taken on James Sands who joined the club on loan last January.

Souttar is injury-prone and that means Rangers do need another quality centre-back, maybe in January or next summer.

In other Rangers news, a club in Europe holds the option to re-sign a player from Ibrox whenever they like.
