Rangers transfer news as defensive reinforcement wanted at Ibrox

Rangers manager Michael Beale is in the running to sign three or four players before the transfer window ends next Tuesday (31 January).

According to a report from the Scottish Daily Mail (28 January, back page), Beale is looking to add Nicolas Raskins and Morgan Whittaker to his ranks, but the Gers boss is also looking to bolster his defence in the closing stages of the window.

More arrivals are expected next week, but even if Rangers fail to sign any new player, Beale suggests he has enough depth in the squad to cope with the pressure for the next five months.

Another defender?

Do Rangers really need another defender in the January window?

The defence is one area that needs serious consideration next summer.

On paper, Beale has got plenty of options. He has got Connor Goldson, Ben Davies, John Souttar, Filip Helander, James Sands, and Leon King as major options.

However, Helander won’t be back within the next three months and he is out of contract next summer as well.

Although Beale dropped hints that he could provide a lifeline to the Swede defender, the truth is he is currently not adding value to the squad due to his injury.

Likewise, Souttar hasn’t played much football this season, and he is injury prone. He can’t be trusted to last the entire season, and the club need to use him properly.

Sands is on loan and there is no guarantee that the club will sign him permanently, although they could do so in the summer. Thus, Rangers may need to add one more quality centre-back, but it is not their top priority at the moment.

In other Rangers news, a club in Europe holds the option to re-sign a player from Ibrox whenever they like.
