Jacky Mathijssen tips Nicolas Raskin to join Rangers in January window

Belgium Under-21 boss Jacky Mathijssen has said that “Rangers fans will be delighted” if Nicolas Raskin joins Ibrox in the January transfer window.

The young midfielder has been frozen out by Standard Liege, and Mathijssen feels that a move to Scotland would suit the player who has got “excellent” technique.

Michael Beale confessed last week he was interested in the Liege playmaker and Sacha Tavolieri has reported that a contract has been agreed with chiefs now going to Belgium to seal the deal.

As of now, the Jupiler Pro League outfit have so far had no direct contact from Gers chiefs.

“The Rangers fans will be delighted if he goes to Glasgow,” said Mathijssen in an interview with Daily Record.

“He’s a player who is always all-in. He’s got a good heart, is always ready to work but has excellent technique too and is very flexible tactically. He can play No.8, he can play in the pockets.

“That’s how he plays for me in the Under-21s. He’s very young but his potential is high.

“My assistant Thomas played in Glasgow with Rangers and he knows very well the pressures there so I’m sure he’ll be in touch as soon as this is made official to help him.”

Get it done

Rangers have already signed Todd Cantwell, and it seems there could be more signings in the next few days.

According to a report from Le Soir, Raskin has already completed his Rangers medical in London last Friday (20 January). He has already jetted to England, and let’s hope the Bears can reach an agreement with Liege which shouldn’t be a big ask.

Midfield is one of the areas that need bolstering. At the moment, there is hardly any creativity from central midfield, and Raskin can provide the much-needed flair.

The 21-year-old is free to leave the club in the summer, and therefore Ross Wilson must look to agree a measly fee to bring him now.

He has been completely frozen out after contract extension talks fell through, and he is not in the first-team picture at the moment.

Morgan Whittaker at Swansea is another player who is being targeted but the Championship club are playing hardball over his potential exit.

In other Rangers news, official club partner says Michael Beale “can’t go on” with current players.
