Alfredo Morelos transformation blows pundit away as Rangers exit prediction now shattered
We’re delighted to welcome Tam McManus as our exclusive Rangers columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…
Tam McManus is really impressed by the improvement he’s seen from Alfredo Morelos at Rangers in the last couple of weeks.
Morelos, 26, has been criticised for his lack of fitness all season while he’s also widely expected to leave at some point in 2023 as his contract expires in the summer.
Speaking to Ibrox News on 4 January, after the 2-2 Old Firm draw with Celtic, McManus predicted that Morelos might have played his final match for Rangers in that game because he was so bad.
However, Morelos has improved drastically, scoring two goals and supplying an assist in the 3-2 win at Kilmarnock on Wednesday (18 January) while also assisting Ryan Jack’s equaliser against Aberdeen in the Viaplay Cup semi-final at the weekend (15 January).
McManus believes that injuries to Kemar Roofe and Antonio Colak mean that Michael Beale has had no option but to keep on playing Morelos, which has seen his fitness improve and also his performances.
“He’s under pressure and I don’t think he’s been playing particularly well – but he got two goals on Wednesday night,” McManus told Ibrox News.
“He’s got an unbelievable goalscoring record against Kilmarnock, 16 goal contributions in 16 appearances against them. He took his goals well.
“He does what he has to do and that’s score goals.
“I have to say, I think he’s getting fitter every week because he’s playing. Morelos has played because Rangers have got no one else.
“Kemar Roofe comes on but he gets injured and Antonio Colak is injured.
“Morelos is now getting a run in the team and I think when you see a player who’s not in the best of shape, the best thing to do is to play games.
“He’s getting plenty of games under his belt now and he’s only going to get fitter and better.”
Morelos has now scored seven goals and supplied four assists in 27 appearances across all competitions for Rangers this season, with all of those goals coming in the Premiership.
In other Rangers news, the Gers want to offer a four-and-a-half-year contract to seal the signing of this European ace.
