Kris Boyd: Time is up for Alfredo Morelos at Rangers, he could be seeking Ibrox exit

Kris Boyd has suggested that the time is up for Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos as he could be seeking an exit away from Ibrox in the January window.

The Colombian striker has a contract at the club until the end of the season, and he is yet to sign a new deal. Boyd feels that Morelos is nowhere near fit enough to prosper in Michael Beale’s system.

The Sky Sports pundit adds that Morelos is not the same player anymore that he once was and he has his eyes on a move elsewhere.

Rangers

“There is no doubt for me that his time is up at Rangers,” said Boyd on Sky Sports (transfer centre live blog, 4 January, 15:54pm).

“Alfredo Morelos is not the same player that he was for whatever reason. He might have his eyes on a move elsewhere.

“It seems to be the case every transfer window, it has not materialised and you look at it right now, the way that Michael Beale wants to play, Alfredo Morelos is nowhere near fit enough to trigger that press as such. It’s not anything he hasn’t done in the past.

“You are not asking someone who is not the fastest to run the 100 metres in nine seconds or whatever. Alfredo Morelos has occupied back-fours not only in Scotland but in Europe.

“I have said it before, he is a fantastic footballer when he is on it. He is a handful, he can score goals, he has scored over 100 goals for Rangers but at this moment in time, you feel that his time is up.”

Big decision

Morelos is a club hero and he has scored over 100 goals for the Bears since joining the club in 2017.

He has been a prolific striker for the Scottish giants over the years, but his importance in the side has gradually waned.

Beale has tried to get the best out of him by giving him a regular starting role. While he has scored in recent games, but his overall contribution is disappointing.

Morelos gave away a silly pass in the Old Firm clash that allowed Daizen Maeda to give the visitors a lead at Ibrox on Monday (2 January) in the Scottish Premiership.

His fitness remains a major issue for the club, and Giovanni van Bronckhorst wasn’t too pleased with him as well.

Boyd is spot on here. Beale loves to play aggressive attacking football where strikers are asked to press hard along with scoring goals. Morelos can’t do that at the moment.

With his contract expiring in the summer, it’s time for the club to make a bold decision on his future.
