Rangers transfer pursuit of Sunderland striker Ross Stewart tricky amid emergence of clause and Middlesbrough interest

Rangers transfer pursuit of Sunderland striker Ross Stewart is reportedly tricky amid the emergence of an extension clause in his deal.

According to Teeside Live, even Middlesbrough are pursuing his services along with a number of clubs in England and will offer him a significant hike in his current wages.

Daily Record have previously claimed that Rangers are also ready to make a move for the 26-year-old striker.

Teeside Live journalist Craig Johns wrote, “Stewart is also a player Boro have held an interest in for some time and they would ideally like to sign a goalscoring 9 if one is available at the right price. He has six months left on his Sunderland contract, though they do have a 12-month extension clause, making it a little trickier.

“Nevertheless, there have been suggestions Sunderland might sell for the right price and Boro would be willing to considerably boost his current weekly wage. But with reports of PL interest as well as Rangers and Olympiakos, it might not be as straightforward. One to follow closely next month though.”

Morelos replacement

Stewart had his injury issues in the past and hopefully, he is now over them and ready to feature regularly.

Rangers clearly is a step up from Sunderland and he woud be willing to accept a move north of the border.

His director of football, Kristjaan Speakman, described him as “incredible” over the summer [Chronicle Live] and he would certainly be a good addition at Ibrox.

Alfredo Morelos’ future remains up in the air and with close to six months left on his current de, he does not seem any closer to penning an extension at Ibrox.

Stewart will be a good replacement for him and one who would not even cost too much money and Gers may actually save some funds if they get a good deal for Morelos.

It remains to be seen whether or not Michael Beale is open to Stewart coming in or if he can successfully convince the Colombian to change his mind.

Whatever the decision, it needs to be made quickly as the window is fast approaching and Gers have to be proactive if they are to strengthen their squad.
