BBC pundit slams Rangers defender Borna Barisic after what he saw him do this week

Andy Townsend savaged Rangers defender Borna Barisic for his overall performance in Croatia’s win against Japan in the World Cup on 5 December.

Barisic’s side ended up winning on penalties after it ended 1-1, but he did have a number of dicey moments during the game with Junya Ito often getting the better of him.

At one moment in the second half, after Ito ran past him, Townsend, a BBC pundit, brought up the fact that he’s been having a hard time since the start of the game.

He said on FIFA’s world feed (05/12, 16:33), “Barisic’s been struggling for a while. Struggling with the pace of the game. Whenever Ito was running at him it looked like he could get past with ease.”

Not at his best

Barisic started his first game of the competition in what was a must-win encounter for Croatia as they would be coming back home if they failed to win.

Borna Sosa was the go to left-back since the competition started but he missed this game due to a virus and was not even on the bench.

Had Barisic put close to the perfect performance, Zlatko Dalic would’ve had selection dilemmas ahead of the quarter-final clash against Brazil.

However, the Rangers left-back gave him very little to stake a claim in the starting eleven for that one and we’ll be really surprised if he’s named ahead of kick-off.

It was a good learning experience for Barisic and we’re hoping that he does not get too disheartened by his performance.

He will have better games surely but this could be a clear indicator as any that he’s currently waning and it may be time for Rangers to also think of signing another left-back.
