Rangers set to announce new Leon King contract after Fabrizio Romano update on Monday

Rangers are set to announce that Leon King has agreed a contract extension with the club which will keep him at Ibrox until 2026, according to The Times.

The Guardian’s Fabrizio Romano revealed (via Twitter, 12 December) that a deal is in place for the 18-year-old to commit his future to the Gers, with there being a host of “top” Premier League clubs interested.

King’s current deal takes him until the summer of 2024, and it’s understood the defender has agreed to a two-year extension (The Times, 13 December).

Romano had previously suggested (Here We Go Podcast, 13:08, 10 October) that Leeds, Manchester United and Newcastle had all sent scouts to watch the defender.

Great news

This is great work by the club and Michael Beale will be absolutely to have the defender on board for the foreseeable future. The new Rangers boss has a reputation for working with younger players and the chance to develop one of the more promising Scottish defenders will excite the 42-year-old.

King has already learnt so much from the 2022/23 season which will benefit him in the long run, and it’s likely he will be a key part of Beale’s plans going forward. Furthermore, the contract extension also allows Rangers to protect themselves when it comes to the 18-year-old’s future.

It will prevent King from leaving Ibrox for below his value and will mean any potential suitor will have to pay over the odds for his services. It’s also a smart move by King, who could’ve easily decided to leave the club and look for a more lucrative deal south of the border. Staying at Ibrox and gaining first-team experience is the best thing for his development.

In other Rangers news, a journalist believes Michael Beale can transform Malik Tillman into a £20 million player if he signs a permanent contract.
