Ross Wilson: Rangers agreed terms to seal transfer of Dutch player
Ross Wilson claims that Rangers were extremely close to signing an unnamed Dutch player during Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s time at the club.
At the AGM held on 6 December, the Gers chief even said that terms were agreed upon to seal the transfer, but he ended up going elsewhere.
Wilson did not go so far as to name the player but responded after a fan asked him a very pointed question about not signing a Dutch player under a Dutch manager.
He said, as quoted by Heart and Hand’s podcaster Colin on Twitter, “The manager has final say on transfers and every player that comes in. We agreed terms with one Dutch player who then choose another club.”
Simons or Doekhi?
There have been plenty of Dutch players linked with moves to Ibrox in the past, but few came close to sealing a move.
Joey Veerman appeared to be a prime target under Steven Gerrard, but the links were nowhere near as concrete under van Bronckhorst.
This means that it was probably down to Xavi Simons or Danilho Doekhi – both of whom were linked with moves to Rangers over the summer.
Dutch outlet Der Gerlander claimed in May 2022, that after his deal expired at Vitesse Arnhem, he was going to be on his way out, but he decided to join Union Berlin and snubbed Rangers.
Similarly, Simons, who was at PSG at the time was linked with a number of elite European clubs before he finally made up his mind.
The Ibrox links to the Dutchman go all the way back to December 2021, but he is now plying his trade at Eredivisie club PSV.
