Graeme Souness tells BBC he is not comfortable with Giovanni van Bronckhorst sack talk

Graeme Souness has admitted he isn’t comfortable with Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s Rangers sack talk, backing him to stay at the club.

Van Bronckhorst is facing extreme scrutiny from fans for Rangers’ poor form this season which saw the club catastrophically crash out of the UEFA Champions League.

Souness confessed that it’s “tough” being the manager of Rangers and that the players of the squad also need to face some responsibility for the Gers woeful outings.

“I am never comfortable talking about a manager losing their job,” said Souness as quoted by BBC Scotland.

“I know how tough it is to be a manager, I know how tough it is to manage in this city and Giovanni van Bronckhorst would have known that coming into it.

“All the spotlight comes on you because you’re second and that’s when you have to be big – you have to stand up, be counted and play your way out of it.

“It’s not always about managers. The players have to stand up and be counted. This is a time you want your leaders in the dressing room.

“If the fans turn up in a negative mindset, that can only hurt the players. Stick with your team, stick with the manager.”

Rangers

Each to their own.

Fair enough that Souness wants to back Van Bronckhorst, especially as he is a former manager himself, but his time is surely up at Ibrox.

It’s hard to see the Dutchman doing anything to revive the fortunes of the club this season and playing catch up at this stage in the Scottish Premiership is never a good sign.

The club’s hierarchy are simply giving up on the season by extending van Bronckhorst’s stay at the club even further.

And whilst it’s all well and good backing a manager to the very end, in this case, it’s doing Rangers absolutely no favours moving forward.

Surely every fan would love to be proven wrong at this point and if by some miracle Van Bronckhorst turns things around it would be welcomed with open arms.

Nevertheless, in the cruel and harsh game of modern football, miracles like this simply don’t happen easily, especially not in Rangers’ case.
