Finance Expert: Rangers and Celtic will never share new stadium as Premier League invite doubted

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Rangers...

Dan Plumley has insisted that Rangers and Celtic sharing a new stadium will “never” happen after Graeme Souness made the bizarre suggestion.

The Finance Expert admitted that Premier League clubs would also likely object to the Old Firm making the move down south, with European qualification likely to be taken away if it did happen.

Fans of both clubs are also likely to kick off at any idea of potentially sharing a stadium, with the history and hostility simply enough to rubbish that instantly.

“He must have been struggling for something to write,” he exclusively told Ibrox News.

“Shared stadium is interesting from a financial perspective, it always is. It’s never going to happen with these clubs, let’s be clear about it, the rivalry, the hostilities and the histories of their own grounds, you just can’t see a situation where that would happen given the relationship.

“The other side of it, some of that narrative seems to suggest that it’s up to Rangers and Celtic when they move down to the Premier League, but you would imagine that the Premier League clubs would have something to say about it, we know it’s a 14-club voting system, it may mean a restructuring of the league, you’re not going to imagine clubs wanting to vote them in place of their own places.

“I’m not actually sure what it does to Rangers and Celtic on the pitch as it makes them less likely to qualify for the Champions League, because are they going to finish in the top four of the Premier League? Probably not.

“You can see some of the challenges, they just seem to be two very strange statements to me when you consider everything, I can’t see a shared stadium taking off, I don’t think the fans would want it and it would be voted out straight away.

“Also, I can’t see Premier League clubs wanting Rangers and Celtic to come in.”
