Ally McCoist hits back at Rangers fans calling for Giovanni van Bronckhorst to be sacked

Ally McCoist has hit back at Rangers fans who have asked for Giovanni van Bronckhorst to be sacked from his role as manager at Ibrox this season.

It comes after the Bears officially claimed the title of the worst-ever Champions League group stage performance upon their return to the big time.

Chris Sutton told McCoist that he had heard the Rangers fans call for Van Bronckhorst to be laid off having seen enough, something that McCoist insisted was “harsh.”

Speaking live on BT Sports’ Scottish Football Extra as shared on Twitter (04 November), Sutton kickstarted the conversation with what he has been hearing.

“The manager is the one who is getting the slack,” he said. “There are Rangers fans out there who are who are saying no more from this manager, we have had enough.”

McCoist was not having it one little bit: “That’s harsh,” he replied.

“That’s very harsh, because of a poor European campaign with two of the best teams in the tournament? Two of the teams that are capable of winning it have completely outclassed Rangers.”

Harsh?

There are two sides to every story.

Van Bronckhorst guided Rangers to the Europa League final and then into the Champions League through the qualifiers after more than a decade away, something that will never be forgotten.

But, the football has become stale in recent months with the same plans just not working in certain games and Celtic appearing to produce a gap again.

The Ibrox board, on the other hand, have simply not backed the manager with appropriate funding after these successes though, and that usually leads to clubs falling behind.

Losing Joe Aribo and Calvin Bassey, two huge cogs in this side previously, and replacing them with Tom Lawrence and John Souttar who have had more injuries than appearances just simply isn’t good enough.

These are similar failings that have happened time after time, so when do eyes start looking at the likes of Ross Wilson and Douglas Park?

Change is due, it just depends on where it happens.
