Scottish Cup rebrand confirmed and will be on full display in Rangers v Aberdeen

The SPFL have now confirmed that the Scottish League Cup will be known as the Viaplay Cup for the rest of the season, as shared by Football Scotland.

Viaplay completed their takeover of Premier Sports and secured the naming rights of the tournament, with Rangers already booking their place at Hampden Park.

The new branding will be on display in Celtic’s clash against Kilmarnock on January 14th 2023 and Rangers’ semi-final game against Aberdeen on January 15th 2023.

Both games will be live and exclusive on Viaplay with the broadcaster also taking over control of the Scotland national team, showing fixtures in Euro 2024, Euro 2028 and the World Cup 2026.

“Everyone at the SPFL is thrilled to be working with our new title cup sponsor Viaplay,” said SPFL chief Neil Doncaster as quoted by Football Scotland.

“This Cup has been a success for many years and Viaplay’s coverage and support of this competition until at least 2026/27 is very welcome indeed.

“We are looking forward to the exciting Viaplay Cup semi-finals in January and the final in February – all games which can be watched live and exclusively on Viaplay.”

Rangers

Opportunity.

The Viaplay Cup presents Rangers with a solid chance at some silverware this season, in what will be a likely final against Celtic.

Rangers are the most successful team ever in the competition with 27 wins, whilst Celtic the current holders of the trophy have only won 20 times.

The competition was initially a straight knockout tournament but in 2016-17 the format changed to a group and knockout tournament.

It’s always a fun competition to watch and one Rangers will want to win to add to their trophy cabinet under Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

Aberdeen will be a tricky tie, but after Saturday’s convincing win, the club can likely do little to stop Gers from progressing to the final.

By the time the semi-final takes place, the future of Van Bronckhorst will likely be clearer and there may even be some new signings at the club.

The latter statement is probably wishful thinking, but with Rangers’ current injury crisis it isn’t completely out of the question.
