BBC Sportsound pundit slams James Tavernier after what he did in Champions League clash v Ajax

Steven Thompson has slammed James Tavernier for his involvement in Steven Berghuis’ opening goal for Ajax and suggested the Rangers captain was “caught sleeping”.

Berghuis’ neat finish in the fourth minute gave the Eredivisie side the lead after a clever passage of play from Alfred Schreuder’s men.

Thompson was less than impressed with how Rangers dealt with the situation and suggested Tavernier was at the heart of what went wrong.

Talking on BBC Sportsound [1 November, 20:07] he said: “It’s absolutely dreadful defending from Rangers. Tavernier caught sleeping. It’s a lovely lay-off from Kudus and Berghuis is there. A nightmare start.”

It’s over

Most Rangers fans will be delighted their Champions League adventure has come to an end after a quite frankly embarrassing return to the competition after 12 years away.

Europe’s premier competition is simply a step too far for Scottish clubs and the only positive the Light Blues can really take is that they’ve been handed a healthy paycheck for their participation. Now all attention must turn to their domestic commitments and build on their excellent domestic victory over Aberdeen.

The win over the Dons has given the Ibrox faithful a glimmer of hope. Giovanni van Bronckhorst needed the convincing victory at a time when many were calling for his time at the club to come to an end. It’s now essential the Dutchman puts together a good run domestically ahead of the Gers’ next Old Firm fixture against Celtic at the start of January.

Van Bronckhorst can ill afford to put a foot wrong in between now and then.
