Rangers nearly signed Russian league’s top scorer Gamid Agalarov this summer

Rangers were extremely close to signing the Russian top flight’s leading goalscorer Gamid Agalarov this summer according to the player’s agent.

The Ibrox outfit instead opened the purse strings to sign Antonio Colak from PAOK for £1.8million, a move that has turned out to be a good one.

Nevertheless, Agalarov’s agent Jamal Akaev has admitted that Rangers were “extremely interested” in his player over the summer before opting for the Croatian instead.

“From February onwards, Glasgow Rangers were extremely interested in signing Gamid,” said the agent as quoted by the Glasgow Times.

“The club continued to show interest after those events in Ukraine. I have a good relationship with their sporting director Ross Wilson. But It didn’t happen.

“Rangers have a Polish scout in Eastern Europe and he watched all of Gamid’s matches and asked me for his details.

“But they weren’t able to put together a concrete proposal and Rangers signed another striker instead.”

Morelos replacement?

Agalarov seems like a decent talent to be fair and it goes to show that the recruiting system has at least got eyes on good players in foreign leagues.

Nevertheless, after Colak’s start to life at Ibrox, it looks like the Bears made the right decision on this one, he’s been absolutely fantastic and a shining light in bleak times.

Adding more firepower to the squad never goes amiss though and maybe Rangers should look at Agalarov again in the summer to replace the fading Alfredo Morelos.

Morelos’ contract comes to an end this summer and the forward’s form has been less than convincing, whether he deserves a new contract is up for debate.

Colak has definitely eased the Gers’ dependence on Morelos this season and has shown that the Ibrox outfit doesn’t necessarily need him anymore.

A fresh new forward who could play alongside Colak may be the best route to take moving forward or at least someone who can challenge the Croat on the front of the goals.
