Kenny Miller: Motherwell should have had a red card against Rangers
Kenny Miller believes VAR would have seen Motherwell have a man sent off in their clash with Rangers on Sunday afternoon at Fir Park.
The light blues claimed a much needed 2-1 win thanks to goals from Malik Tillman and John Lundstram, as they held off a late fightback from the home side following Stuart McKinstry’s curling free-kick.
But after watching Motherwell defender Bevis Mugabi handle the ball to stop Alfredo Morelos going through on goal, Miller told BBC Sportscene [16 October, 19:36] that he would have been sent off had VAR been in play during the game.

“I think to the letter of the law there’s no doubt Alfredo Morelos is going to be straight through on goal here.
“When we see the other angle, it may be harsh.
“But I think to the letter of the law that handball is stopping Morelos from going through to have a goalscoring opportunity.
“I think VAR looks at that and it’s going to be a red card.”
Facts
It’s interesting that there is a lot of talk about Leon King potentially being sent off for a tackle late in the game that was near the halfway line and didn’t do any damage, but no mention of this incident.
Mugabi clearly moves his hand towards the ball and stops Morelos going through on goal, which almost certainly would have resulted in a third goal and sealed all three points slightly earlier.

But because Rangers got the win regardless of the decision not going their way, nobody is batting an eyelid and it’s as if it didn’t happen.
With VAR due to come into play next weekend against Livingston, it’ll be interesting to see how many of those decisions get remembered now because they get pulled up rather than being buried because of the end result.
Rangers are on the wrong end of many decisions, but because we usually win nobody cares. Thankfully that looks set to change and we haven’t been harmed by this one once again.
