Steven Thompson slates Rangers winger Rabbi Matondo after Motherwell display

Steven Thompson has slated Rabbi Matondo after the winger was substituted for Rangers in their 2-1 Scottish Premiership win over Motherwell.

The 22-year-old is yet to score for the Gers and was replaced in the 65th minute after yet another disappointing performance for Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side.

The former Rangers striker felt the winger didn’t do anywhere near enough during the match and felt he didn’t impact the game anywhere near enough.

Talking on BBC Sportsound [16 October, 13:24] Thompson said: “Matondo doesn’t do anywhere near enough. In this match, he had one run, where he carried the ball 50-yards but then mis-controlled it. No surprise to see Arfield go off either, he’s not had any impact on the game.”

Not working out

It’s fair today things aren’t working out for the 22-year-old after his summer move to Ibrox. The team’s poor performance overall hasn’t helped his cause but he certainly needs to produce more for van Bronckhorst’s side.

The win at Fir Park was much-needed for the Gers, particularly after the midweek drubbing by Liverpool. Although the display against Motherwell was well below what most fans expected, all that mattered was getting three points on the board to relieve some of the pressure on van Bronckhorst’s shoulders.

Rangers

The Dutchman must now find a way of getting his team firing on all cylinders and looking like a more cohesive unit in order to mount a credible title challenge. The Gers will likely have to win every single game up until they host Celtic at the start of January in order to keep their hopes of regaining the title alive. The Gers really need the likes of Matondo to find some form and really show their worth.
