Chris Sutton unloads on Rangers captain James Tavernier after embarrassing message

Chris Sutton has emptied both barrels on Rangers star James Tavernier this week after his message apologising for the 7-1 defeat against Liverpool.

The skipper insisted that the Champions League was just a bonus, with the main focus being on the domestic league and cups in Scotland.

Sutton could not believe his eyes and labelled the message that was delivered as “embarrassing” and totally the wrong message to send to the fans.

Speaking live on BT Sport, as shared on their official Twitter, Sutton did not hold back after what he saw the skipper do this week after the humiliation.

“I don’t know if you’ve both seen James Tavernier’s comments and apology,” he said.

“That worries me. I think, first of all, does he need to apologise? James Tavernier has been a brilliant servant to Rangers, and an excellent player but to come out and say that the Champions League is just a bonus for the players and the club, and their main focus is on the domestic league and the cups – come on.

“That is the wrong message, that is embarrassing.”

Embarrassing?

There is a point to both sides here, as much as it pains us to say.

Tavernier was right to speak out and the Champions League is a bonus, but that doesn’t mean we should just roll over and get battered every single week – you have to go all out to compete and pick up points.

What is the point of going through all of that trouble to qualify if you aren’t going to take it seriously?

As for Sutton, the message may be wrong but it isn’t to go as far as embarrassing.

Rangers and Giovanni van Bronckhorst have constantly been feeding these terrible messages after each Champions League game saying they can’t compete and it’s getting tiring now.

It wouldn’t be dreadful if they were top of the Scottish Premiership, but right now, we are second behind Celtic, so that message doesn’t exactly make much sense, does it?

Something isn’t sitting right at Ibrox right now, and it has to change.
